The 94 and 742 are the epitome of deer camp deer/ drive rifles.

That’s a family treasure. I have a similar story about my grandfather’s .30-30.

Wow, Alice! That brings back some memories! My first 94 was a Christmas present for my 15th holiday. I had had my eye on a Remington Gamemaster 760, after reading the famous article on the Benoit family of Vermont that asked "Are the Benoit's the Best Deer Hunting Family in the Country?" in a 1970 magazine, I HAD to have one. Hell, that article was a prime motivation for me going to boarding school here in VT and eventually manipulating my family to move here. But that trusty 94 did not let me down. I was 17 years old before I took my first buck with it. Years later, I needed to sell it to buy a Christmas present for my new bride. I sold it to the mother of a young man of 15 for his Christmas present. I miss it terribly, but the thought of another young man's Christmas brought a feeling of warmth and goodness to my heart. Bless you for sharing this beautiful story of yours. It brought back such good feelings. Thank you!

I love my Model 94 and often reach past my Savage .308 with its 4x Vortex scope to carry the bushwacker.

My absolute favorite rifle to hunt with. With quite a few rifle to choose from, the old 94 is the only one I used my last 15 years of deer hunting. It has a perfect fit and feel and a boat load of history.

This is perfect. To be young and pining after the rifle you dream of while overlooking how cool "your" first deer really is feels like a rite of passage, I think. I carried my Uncle's 94, my Dad's 742, and eventually bought myself a big, bad, cool-guy gun. If I had to grab one with each hand and leave the house in a moment's notice, you can bet I'd leave mine behind and bring those two with me! I love this, Alice. Thanks for sharing it.

I’m cooking a fat doe today that was harvested with grandpa’s Marlin 336 chambered in .35 Remington. Took it on the SD plains to boot. Had my two boys sitting in the fence row with me when she popped out of the bedding area at about 140 yards. Broke her leg, damaged the heart, and down she went. Might get a Henry Long Ranger to push the range a bit though, this 200 grain bullet drops like a rock after 100 yards.

It's funny how the gifts we hate turn into treasures. Like you say, hunting isn't about shiny, pretty guns. Getting things done usually requires beat-up, dirty equipment or broken-in equipment. I'm glad the Winchester '94 worked out for you. Thank you for sharing, Alice.
