LOVED this Alice! Having come from a generation where deer camp and hunting was off limts to the female gender, I am SO glad to see this ridiculous social comeuppance gradually fading into the history of a society that needs all genders to connect to their food and nature. I would love to have an off-line discussion about this concerning a couple of mothers who are teaching their daughters that "women give life. They don't take it." Ugh! I honestly don't know how to respond since, my gender automatically disqualifies my opinion.

I love this essay. I love that women make up the fasted growing cohort of new hunters. I love that I pushed through all the barriers (real and imagined) to become a deer hunter at 60. Long live Artemis!

Good to see another mother daughter duo out hunting. My friend Mia Anstine and her daughter are also an effective team. My hunting days are over, but there are times I wish my daughter and I had gone out together. Great article!

The story I have told here before was about a son of a friend. He went deer hunting and shot a nice buck but had to call his date and tell her he was going to have to cancel the date. Her family had just moved, and this was her first date. She decided to go to the young man's house and find out why. When she got there the young man's dad told her about the buck and that he was going to have to dress out to the buck. She went in the house and the boy's mom found some coveralls and a hat and some work boots. Along with a sharp knife and she went out to the shop and helped the young man dress the deer. She passed the dad and said, "This is not my first rodeo". After she was introduced, my friend told his son. You need to do your best to keep her.

Thanks for the post. Where I live in Maine, there are many women I know who hunt whose husbands don't. And they are passing the passion to the their kids. The kids come through my hunter safety classes, many of them girls. And I get some messages from their moms when they have success. And sometimes when they don't. These kids get it.
